The Steiner family is one of the most famous Jewish families connected with Bratislava’s history. After establishing a book-selling business in 1847, several generations of Steiners ran it until it was Aryanized by a writer, Ľudo Ondrejov, who had the owners deported to extermination camps during the Holocaust. The firm was re-established after the fall of Communism by an iconic Bratislava figure, Selma Steiner. The descendants of the family in Israel installed a memorial plaque on the façade of the original Steiner house.
